Putting It Together

Last Friday we were at the hardware store. Hadn't been there in a while and I needed to do some basic home improvements. One improvement was to change the torn paper blind on the front door. It has been hanging there for nearly three years, I am proud to say. So I went in search of a magnetic curtain hanger to hang my homemade curtain on. Get it Girl!!!! I don't need to buy one. I got skills.

Then we needed some spray to rid of the weeds and some stones for the front yard to add to the two I bought....,yes you guessed three years ago, to assist my company in the rain and snow. I needed to say I did something this summer. lol

Upon first walking into the store my 6'5 son sees a sign, that I would not have paid any attention to. It was an advertisement for children to come and build. The theme this week.....Monster Trucks! You already know I was in there like swimwear.

I didn't tell my younger son because he would have reminded me until no end. So I made it a surprise for him.

The next morning we show up too early to the session, so we walk around looking at bathroom furniture and rugs that he said were 30 feet tall. Gotta love children and their imaginations.

Around ten we head back to the production room to make our Monster Truck and I think we were the only family who had never been there and it showed. I was following the directions and my son was too. But after hammering the first four nails he lost interest. He only wanted to put on the stickers, which were next to last on the directions list.

So I had to encourage him to get on the floor and hit the nails and make the truck look like the picture. But he didn't want to hit the nails he wanted to play with the stickers. Fortunately a very helpful assistant, I believe her name is Melani, can to my rescue about five times. Getting the nails through the wood was a little tough at times and my son giving those ever soft hits just didn't cut it.

Families came in, twenty or so minutes after we had been there, and their boys just caught on and were nearly to the point where my son and I were. I just kept encouraging him, even when he became a little agitated and threw two paper cut-out cars across the table because I told him this was not playtime.

With all of the hammering and redirecting, of my son, a sista was a bit beside herself because I believed this was to be a fun activity for my son and me. Instead it turned more into a learning experience. Where I needed to be more patient and he needed to learn when it's playtime and when it's not. We eventually put the truck together and he was very happy. So happy that whenever someone sees the truck he says, "I put it together at the hardware store."

If only that was partially true. lol

There is Healing.....Thanks Sana!!!

I remember so clearly when I saw Sana at the Health Expo in 2008. I was in dire straits. My marriage was over and I was in a relationship with someone where I didn't know where our direction was going. I told Sana I didn't know if I wanted to cut all of my hair off or get a sew in. She told me either way she would take of my hair. Lord knows I needed someone to.

So for the past two years I have sat in Sana's chair, talking and laughing. Meeting new people and sharing new experiences. Each time I left her chair I was a different person. Always ready for my close up. Hello!

Within the past couple of weeks I decided to give my hair a breather and allow my God given hair to be exposed to the world. Lord was I scared. I hadn't seen my hair or had to deal with it for over two years but the time had come.

Because of many factors, mainly me being scared and time constraints I took on the task of taking my weave out and had a good friend relax it for me. I didn't know what to expect. When I told Sana I was going to give my hair a break she was so excited and told me that I would love my hair. And you know what? She was right. Just like she had been for the past two years.

Looking at myself wearing my own hair has been welcoming and confirming that I have truly healed from the hurt of the past and the future is definitely much healthier. It's now my responsibility to maintain and make better and wiser decisions. As it relates to my hair, my family, my finances and my personal life.

Now don't get it twisted. You have not seen the last of the Romance Curls!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Sana!!!

Ledisi -"Higher Than This" Sunday Best Season 3 6/13/2010

LeAndria Johnson - Sunday Best Finale

June 21, 2010.....excerpt from Raising A Warrior

Right now we are still recuperating from the weekend. My son's high school team played in the Midwest High School Shootout. Two games on Friday at Sports Plus, three games on Saturday at Sports Plus and three games at Miami University.
My mind and body are worn out. We left for Oxford yesterday at 6:30. I believe in traveling early. We picked up my niece and another player, and hit the road. It was a nice drive and Oxford has such a beautiful campus. We grabbed breakfast once we got there and then went into the gym.

Walnut played at nine, ten, and twelve. They were all good games and it was good to see my son play against some of his friends and AAU teammates. We had family members travel with us and that made the trip even better. During the break in the games we hung outside the gym and rode around Oxford a little bit.

After the last game we had lunch and drove home. I wanted to stop at a nursery and buy a plant but my legs were saying something else. My son offered to drive but I knew that if I got out of the car my legs would probably give way. They had begun to cramp up.

Once we came home and were out for the count. I lay across the bed and Ty stands in front of me and states that he needs a shower. That could only mean one thing. He used the bathroom on himself. All I could do was call out to for someone to give him a shower and change his clothes. Once he was dry he grabbed some shorts and one of his brother's basketball jerseys from the Friar’s Club and started shooting hoops. I was knocked out for several hours and periodically was interrupted by my younger son and his basketball. It has not truly set in my mind that basketball will be a huge part of my life for the next 15 or so years.

At this moment as I write I have thoroughly cleaned my bathroom with can be a part-time job within itself and in my mind I am trying to figure out the errands I need to run for the day. I know I need to hit the store because last night we had our choice of ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
I was scheduled to get my hair done this morning but I am finding it harder with each visit to sit still. I always feel like I have to be on the go. I truly need a moment to chill and do nothing. But that won’t be today. There is lifting at noon, open gym at six and a scrimmage tomorrow at seven. About the only chill time I have write now is writing this piece.

To whom much is given. So much more is required

Magnified

Today magnified how important it will be for my sons to be great fathers when they become older. I can't do anything about the past but I can pray for and instill for a better future. I speak love and blessings into the lives of little boys who don't have an active father in their lives.
