There are moments in life when the news you receive feels bigger than the words being spoken. Sometimes it’s not just the diagnosis, the phone call, the unexpected bill, or the repair itself. It can feel like the bottom has fallen out beneath you. That’s exactly how I felt when I learned something was wrong with my home’s sewer line.
What I thought would be a routine plumbing repair suddenly became conversations about broken pipes, estimates that reached into the tens of thousands, and questions I didn’t know how to answer. Yet somewhere between the uncertainty and the waiting, I realized I wasn’t just carrying the weight of a home repair. I was also carrying the weight of a difficult season. Walking through the first year after losing my father, finally completing tasks that had taken months to complete, and navigating one unexpected challenge after another. Sometimes what feels like one burden is actually the accumulation of many.
The beautiful part of the story is that the bottom hadn’t actually fallen out. One broken branch of the sewer line had caused the entire system to appear as though it had failed. Once that branch was repaired, the line was rehung, flushed, and restored, everything began working again. I couldn’t help but see the parallel to life.
Sometimes one broken area affects everything else, making us believe the damage is greater than it truly is. Healing doesn’t always require rebuilding everything from the ground up. Sometimes it requires identifying what is actually broken, allowing it to be repaired, and trusting that restoration is possible.
On this Thankful Thursday, I’m grateful not only for functioning plumbing, but for another reminder that what appears to be the end of the story may simply be the beginning of restoration.
