Writer’s Block - Complex

One of my students is working on his career as a rap artist. He is serious too. He keeps his red notebook with him, at all times. He discusses potential lyrics with other students interested in the music industry. One day I asked him what his goals were. He told me that he was too complex for me to understand what his dreams were.

Wrong move on his part. I had to sit him down and tell him all of the things he should be doing to get his name out there. Are you going to concerts and networking? Are you reading magazines were artists and their companies are spotlighted? Are you on FB? Are you on Twitter? Is your demo ready, or at least near it? Needless to say after our conversation he comes to me whenever he is stuck with an idea. Last week I gave him a list of Greek and Latin root words and their meaning. You’d thought I had given him a Playstation 3 or something. This young man lit up like a Christmas tree.

On Tuesday in class he seemed down. When I asked him what was wrong he told me he had writer’s block and he didn’t know what to do. I told him that sometimes I have the same problem. Actually I am having that problem right now. It’s not that I don’t have anything to write. I have too much to write about. I liken this to rush hour traffic and everyone wants to get off at the same exit. The cars are coming from all lanes trying to merge to get to that one exit. For me that exit is my blog or my notebook.

I am trying to find a way to get some of it out but like my student, it’s just too complex.

The Ties That Bind Me by Karen Allen

Karen Allen spoke at the Radio One Book Fair. Talk about Real Talk! She spoke nothing but the truth about her life and how her book came to be. I had such a respect for her after she finished speaking. How many of us are living with something and the one place where we should be able to get some help often turns their shoulder to us? The church! Hello!!!!

Karen is not only setting herself free but she is setting the stage for others to become free also.

If I could share some words of encouragement with Karen it would be what my aunt told me. Sometimes what you go through isn’t even for you but for you to bless someone else on how to get through a similar situation.

I Really Miss My Dad by Demetrius Martin

Today I attended the 2011 Radio One Book Fair. In the last session I sat in we were introduced to Demetrius Martin. He is a 10 year old boy from Michigan who has recently had his first book published. The beautifully illustrated book discusses how Demetrius lost his father to violence last year.

During his talk at the book fair Demetrius shared that he hopes his experience will help other children who may be going through similar experiences. He told us that he even has plans for a second book. I did mention that Demetrius is 10? How inspiring.

National Wear Red Day Go Red!!!!!!

Today is National Wear Red Day.

Some of my students are Going Red today and I am a little excited. It's been about 7 or 8 years since I have supported Go Red for Women and this year I am looking forward and loving every moment of it. When some of my students came to class on Thursday they told me that they saw the red dress symbol on the news. Several have decided to make a pledge. I will be so excited to hear how they saw other people wearing red on Friday and that they could identify with the reason for it.
