The following message I received in my email today. Many people who know me know that Romans 8:28 is my favorite scripture. This message truly blessed my heart today.

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28, NIV

Why does God let bad things happen to good people? to innocent people? to children? to me?
Sometimes His ways seem so hard to understand!
In Romans 8:28, Paul wrote to reassure believers who lived in a city dominated by Nero, a madman with absolute power. He wrote encouragingly, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Phrased another way, Paul was reminding the children of God they can be confident that…
all things work together for good,
brokenness leads to blessing,
death leads to life,
and suffering leads to glory!

So when bad things happen, just trust Him!

Stuart Scott ~ What Excellence Looks Like

Last Sunday while preparing for my son's tournament in Huntington, WV we sat in our hotel room watching t.v. and just like so many times over the years one of my sons turned to ESPN. That is where we heard the announcement that Stuart Scott had passed. We watched a woman overwhelmed with grief share with the world the news of his death and then a video played in honor of him. We sat there in silence.

So this week I kept asking myself how do I even know who Stuart Scott is? I don't watch ESPN, let alone know any other anchors besides Stuart Scott. As I read more about him I learned that he began at ESPN in 1993. My oldest son was born in 1992. Now it's starting to kinda make sense. 

I think it was around 1st or 2nd grade that I noticed my son, who is now 22, turning to ESPN. Again another question comes up. "How does he know to turn to ESPN?" There was something on ESPN that had capitivated his attention for him to tune in daily. Yes, he loves sports but it was something different, something more. For years I just thought that was just what boys do, watch ESPN first thing in the morning.

On Sunday last week I remember a sadness in our hotel room for both of my sons. You see Stuart Scott had positively reached my sons via the television. He had modeled for them that you can be yourself and be successful. That being cool and hip doesn't mean that you are not intelligent. In very simple and real terms Stuart Scott was articulate, well dressed and gifted in an area that for many years a 'Stuart Scott' didn't exist. So my sons woke each morning and found a role model to watch. They for years turned to ESPN and discovered excellence. A family man. A man of faith. A man of courage and a man of strength. For that, to Stuart Scott I say thank you for modeling for years what excellence looks like for so many young men and women.

I've read a lot on Stuart Scott this past week. What a life well lived that will impact many people for years to come. Our family sends light and love to his parents, siblings and his daughters, Taelor and Sydni. In you his light will continue to shine. 

InouGsio 3rd Grade at Youth Elite Showcase (Huntington, WV)

This weekend InouGsio's class of 2024, coached by Eric Jackson, traveled to Huntington, WV to compete in the Youth Elite Showcase on the campus of Marshall University. Pool play began on January 4 against WV Titans and Shady Elite. InouGsio  was undefeated in both of those games.

Sunday the competition continued with their first game at 2PM against Shady Elite, with 1:54 left InouGsio was up 34-2. After an unexpected wait InouGsio met Kentucky Heat on the court at 6PM to compete for a spot to play for the championship, with 43 seconds remaining in the game the team from Indy was up 49-19 and would go on to play for the championship against the WV Titans. 

After a hard fought game, several times the competing team's scores were only one point apart. InouGsio hung in there and came out with the victory 34-28.

When His Passion Becomes Important To Her

There was a very small part of me that was hopeful for an indictment on November 24. The rest of me was full aware that it wasn't going to happen. I think after listening to the prosecutor deliver what I call his "Dr. Seuss" version of what happened I became a bit more pissed with each sentence. Did he really have to, in 20 minutes, tell the world that Mike Brown's life wasn't worth an indictment? He really could have just thanked the jury, gave the results and kept it moving. 

I have stayed tuned to CNN. I slept with it on just as I did in August. Did it disturb me to see the people looting? Yes. Ferguson should have prepared better for that. Businesses should have been protected but so should human life. I watched Darren Wilson on ABC last night. He may have said a lot but what I heard him say was this. "He felt small like a five year old holding on to Hulk Hogan. It doesn't haunt me. It's something that happened. I would do it again." Really Darren? Darren is still getting paid. People are raising money for him. He's gotten married recently. And Mike Brown? And Trayvon Martin? And Tamir Rice? And Jordan Davis? There will be no removal from work with pay. No marriage. Futures shot short.

Instead during this holiday season we will hear the silent screams of mothers and fathers who birthed children who are now historic accounts of brown boys whose lives seem not to matter to some. This uproar across the country is not solely for Mike Brown but to let people know that #TheirLivesDoMatter
