So Thankful

In June of this year I began to pray The Prayer of Jabez and The Serenity Prayer twice daily. I can't really explain how it all came about but I knew I wanted more. More peace, more serenity, more blessings and more territory. Just a few months prior I had attached a counter to my blog site. With the counter I can view the hits to the blog and I can also see where the hits are coming from.

I am in such awe when I see that my blog has been opened in not only in the U.S. but also in Italy, Chile, Japan, Spain, London, Brazil, China, Singapore, Germany, Egypt, and South Africa. It's overwhelming to see and to know that what I place on my site is of interest to other people around the world.

I receive many encouraging emails and comments from people who I know and don't know. What started out as a vehicle to promote Ghetto Chick, and my future writings, has turned into something so totally different. My blog has become a part of me that I share with the world. That I share with you.

Thank you so much for your visits, your comments, and your emails. It means so much to me. Special thanks to EDC Creations and Milani Cosmetics for sharing and for your support.

When I was in high school I always wanted to be a writer. I guess dreams really do come true.

The Prayer of Jabez

"Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, 'Oh that Thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast [territory], and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou would keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!' And God granted him that which he requested." 1 Chron 4:10

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

I Needed That

Whew!!! Recently I have gotten to that place of yearning and crying out for God. I just want to hear a word from God. It can be a song, a sermon, or a prayer. I just need to hear from God. Wednesday nights at our church are so important for me to attend. I need that refreshing to get through the rest of the week.

I started to ask Rico if he was going to make it. Instead I made sure I was there. Rico is a part of our praise team and his anointing directs worship straight to the throne room. On this night he ministered in song "Welcome Into This Place" Once in worship I begin to let go of the stress of the day and just simply worship.

Needless to say. I needed that!

I needed to worship. I needed to cry. I needed to praise God for it being as well as it is.

In Prayer for Student Athletes

Last Friday my sister texted my son and I to watch the news. We were not sure what she wanted us to watch but it became apparently obvious it had something to do with several tragedies involving high school athletes in our city. At Goshen High School the community had gathered to pray for football player Erik Coleman, who had suffered bruising of the brain after taking a hit during football practice. The segment went on to disuss the car accident that killed Jordan Day and Jovante Woods, who suffered a severe asthma attack that would, in days, result in his death.

As I sat and watched the news with my 17 year-old son it was hard. I felt like I should have been at Goshen standing and holding hands with the other parents. My heart ached. All of these boys were my son's age and my son has probably come into contact with them or someone who knows them. They have probably passed each other at an athletic or social function. It really brings so much home about how precious and unpredictable life is.

On the news segment Erik's father, Kevin, was not only concerned about his son's injury but also the other boys who were mentioned. I felt him right through my television. So many groups can form a community and I feel that this community, parent's of student athletics, is carrying heavy hearts today. For many students school begins this week. Parents are our preparing for a new year for their children. For two families the week begins with preparing and attending funerals and memorials for their sons.

I send heartfelt prayers out to the families of Jordan Day and Javonte Woods. There are many parents who are praying for your strength and your families during this time.

Thanks to the Coleman family for sharing their pain and concern with our city. Wishing you a wonderful recovery Erik.

To all the parent's who have students that play sports, sometimes it can get tough with injuries, surgeries and other obstacles. I have learned that those moments have bonded my son and I in ways I never imagined. Each day take a moment to thank God for the opportunites you and your family have to be together because you just never really know what the next day holds.

Wrapped Up

Tonight I had a conversation with my son. I was telling him that going into 41 this year I am beginning to define and develop me further. As a teenager there were so many weird things about me. I liked ripped jeans, natural hair, bright make-up and sarongs. I can think back to those days and and my appearance not being socially acceptable to those closest to me. So I kept it "normal" whatever that was.

Now, I feel a sense of freedom within me. So I rock the wet and wavy hair style because I like it and it feels good to show that extension of me. I pick vibrant colors for my eyes because that's what I like. I'm not trying to be cute...I am already that. Hello!!!!! Those things, make-up and hair are just how I express me.

The sarong thing is a whole nother issue. lol. As a little girl I always loved beautiful blankets and being wrapped up in sheets. It's one of those things that is hard to explain but it feels so good. In 2004 I bought my first two sarongs and I was like a kid at Christmas. I would just wrap them around me and sit around the house at total peace. Years later I have several sarongs and sometimes as soon as I hit the door I go to my closet and pick out two, they don't have to match (that doesn't matter) and I wrap them up and tie them  around me. Here lately you may even see me outside with them on. The warmth of the sun on my skin soothes me.

I just love that feeling of existing in my own comfort. I feel so beautiful when I rub my hands through my "own" hair and hug myself and feel "my" skin. Ahhhhh! It's taken some courage. Generally when people come over I will change to look "normal"! I will hurry to put on a t-shirt or something similar. At those points my skin is aching to be free. So now I define my own "normal"......Most days at home I am wrapped up and loving every moment of it.

More Than Basketball

Years of putting in work
My older son has literally been playing basketball since he was in Kindergarten. I remember picking him up from the rec center and he had on his little backpack as he ran toward me yelling "Coach said I can be in his camp!" "Coach said I can be in his camp!" I have never forgotten that day. That day was the beginning for something that I could have never prepared for. Even now it's overwhelming.

After participating in the camp for several years Alex became to old to be a part of the camp so he helped Coach Spoon out by becoming a volunteer. While working at the phone company that year one of my co-workers suggested Alex try and play for the Friar's Club. My co-worker signed him up and Alex was placed on a team. My son has simply always loved the sport. One day we were at a tournament and his team made it to the consolation bracket. Alex was out there playing his little heart out. His team wasn't going to win the championship bracket but they were determined to win something. At the buzzer Alex threw up a shot and sure enough his team won.

It was at that game that I was asked if Alex would be interested in playing for the Cincinnati Friar Warriors. Well needless to say the rest was history. From the 3rd grad until the 11th grade that team traveled and won several tournaments. For several years they were considered one of the top traveling teams in Ohio.

Alex gradually turned into this incredible player. I would watch him study the court and study the other players and make moves to get the job done. He listened intently to his coaches and he learned plays and how to work effectively as team player.

Going to high school he took it to that next level of being a leader on the court and to his peers. Being on the court is therapeutic for him in dealing with so many issues many young African American males deal with, i.e. lack of resources, school, absent fathers and thoughts of the future. At this point we should be focused on his last year of high school and what college he will be attending next year.

So imagine the summer of your senior year becoming injured to the point where doctor's give you a report that puts you in a place of What? and then you begin to think Why? Why now? My response to Alex has been don't believe the report. God has a plan for you and your life. He didn't bring you this far to leave you. We are going to do everything we are told to do at the times we are told to do it. I believe that God heals and He restores. My pastor wrote a note to Alex that put in all into perspective for me "Sometimes God breaks us to make us."

Preparing in Advance

 So in two weeks I will be attending a wedding and I already have my dress (black) and I believe my shoes will be silver. So after deciding what to wear the hardest part for me has been what will I wear on my eyes.

For the past year my eyes have been made up using Milani Cosmetics. No sense in ruining a good thing. Last week I went to Walgreen's and CVS in search of the eyeshadow I will be wearing. When I saw Runway Eyes in Backstage Basics I knew that was it for me. But the colors are not ones that I am use to wearing so I am going to need some assistance. Thank God for Google and YouTube.

Here is a tutorial for Backstage Basics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMknua2btJM

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will post some pics of my finished look.

I might need to pick this up too. Too pretty!!!!!!!!
